 2016 Preview

Lamar County finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Lamar County finished sixth in Class 3A region four with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Lamar County took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2010. The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2007.

Lamar County was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.9 points a game.

Lamar County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.2 points a game.

Since 2010, Lamar County has gone a combined 39-28. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 2A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Lamar County has managed to compile a record of 138-137. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 2A and 183rd in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach James Moore who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Lamar County. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Moore.

Coach Moore's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 3-7 (30.0%).

The Lamar County Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region eight during the 2016 season. The Bulldogs may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 3A to 2A. They will compete in region eight this year. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 69-46 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 2A and 39th in the AHSAA.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Bulldogs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season. Lamar County came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

The Bulldogs open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent South Lamar on Friday, August 19 at J.C. McAdams Field. Last year the South Lamar Stallions finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in second place in Class 1A region six. The Stallions lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Wadley by a score of 29-8.

Lamar County and South Lamar have met a total of 39 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 19-20-0 record against the Stallions. They last met in 2015 with Lamar County winning by a score of 20-13.
